Child Care

You may be looking for a new career in Childcare or you may be looking to advance your career.

Types of Child Care jobs available include Nanny, Housekeeper, Before and After School Carer, Nursery Nurse, Creche Supervisor, Early Years Educator and Overnight Nanny.

To begin a career in Childcare, qualifications are not always essential. Many employers are looking for unqualified as well as qualified Child Care staff. What is important is that you can show that you have the aptitude to work with children and a desire to learn more so that you can apply new knowledge and good practice. However, recognised training not only equips you with the skills and confidence you need to do your job well but demonstrates to employers and parents your competence to look after children and to understand and appreciate a child’s development. In a childcare setting at least 50% of staff working with children under the age of eight must be qualified to Level 2 or above.

There are a variety of ways to become qualified in Child Care and training can be structured to suit your circumstances.

At a college, adult education centre, or through other training providers.

In your place of work (whether paid or voluntary) such as National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) or Modern Apprenticeships, which can be achieved at your own pace.

By distance learning (from your own home and in your own time) - the National Extension College (NEC) provides a range of learning opportunities in early years, childcare and playwork.
